Pollen’s Mission

Pollen is a software and education company rooted in the belief that everyone should be able to control their own economic outcomes. We start with our first product that helps aspiring freelance entrepreneurs start their businesses through productized advisory, a freelancer tech stack, and powerful workflow automations. We demystify the entrepreneurial process and over time, our vision is to become the SBA for the future of work.

Pollen is led by Hillary Bush (MasterClass, Kiva, Bungalow) and Isabel Sheinman (MasterCard, NABU), and is backed by the industry’s leading investment firms: Founder Collective, XYZ Venture Partners and angel investors from Trilogy Education, b12, and more.

The position

We are looking for our founding engineer. You are a senior full-stack software engineer who enjoys bringing products to life, working with other engineers and product owners, and is excited to make economic ability accessible to all.

To be successful, you will wear many hats and will build, QA, deploy, monitor and iterate on the beautiful and quality products you bring to life. Importantly, as one of our earliest team members, you are excited to actively shape Pollen’s culture and how we work together.

Ideal qualifications

  • 4+ years building consumer web products with modern frameworks (e.g. React, Ruby, Rails, Postgres, etc)
  • Experience and passion for full stack web development. You consistently deliver delightful front end experiences and enjoy backend work.
  • Experience building user-friendly APIs and integrations
  • High user empathy and a passion for creating products that customers love.
  • Experience architecting and building high quality and scalable code. You are a scrappy systems thinker who knows when to make tradeoffs between speed and scale.
  • Well versed in taking a product from 0 to 1 and scaling services to support growing user base.
  • Self-starter and owner mentality; you are highly collaborative, identify problems, and create solutions with limited oversight.
  • Excited about shaping the culture and outcomes of an early stage organization.

Bonus points

  • You are in NYC or able to come here for team off sites.
  • Experience integrating across tools and building API partnerships.
  • DevOps experience managing CI/CD, monitoring and alerts, performance analysis and security.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the team and early customers to influence and execute our strategy and plan.
  • Write code and build world class products that people can’t life without, all while moving quickly with limited resources.
  • Make key architectural decisions that will serve as the pillars for the engineering organization.
  • Build our development process, tech stack, and architecture.
  • Grow our engineering team by shaping who and how we hire and the ways we work together.
  • Talk to customers, tease out use cases, and influence prioritization decisions. We are a customer-centric company.
  • Go beyond your role and solve problems as they come up. We value an ownership mentality that focuses on delivering the best experience possible for customers.

What we offer

  • Competitive salary and equity (commensurate with experience)
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Benefits and health insurance
  • Opportunity to be on the ground level of an exciting opportunity with a talented and mission-driven team
  • Pollen is a remote-first company but you will have to be available on US-friendly hours.
